Slow times continue for new truck sales volumes

Bigger and better. Kenworth’s exciting new T610.

Kenworth and Isuzu continue to dominate new truck sales in the Australian market as reported in the October results from the Truck Industry Council’s T-Mark database.

In the heavy duty segment, Kenworth has notched up 2,817 sales for the year to date, followed by Volvo with 1,926 and Isuzu with 1,861.

In the medium duty segment Isuzu’s 2,809 sales puts it ahead of Hino on 1,851 and Fuso on 750.

When it comes to the light duty trucks the combination of run out and new Isuzu models appear to have hit the mark with consumers, helping the brand to a 52.5 per cent market share and 5,920 sales, well ahead of its nearest rivals, Fuso (1,512) and Hino (1,372).

Overall, Australia’s new truck and heavy van market have fallen with total deliveries of 37,648 vehicles for October 25 down 13.4 per cent on October 2024. Worth noting that October 2024 set an all time sales record.

Truck Industry Council CEO Tony McMullan says while the new truck market remains sluggish in 2025, the sales decline has stabilised and largely reflects general business activity across Australia.

“The October result continues the downward trend that we have witnessed for the majority of 2025, though the sales decline has stabilised over the past few months,” McMullan says.

“We continued to witness solid sales in the Light Duty truck segment again in October and that was pleasing to see.

“Economic conditions across most business sectors in Australia remain weak and it appears this lack of business confidence is reflecting in new truck and van sales.

“However, the market remains on track for around 45,000 new truck and van sales in 2025 and that would be the third best ever sales result recorded for the heavy vehicle market in Australia.”

Comparing the results for October, segment by segment, sales in heavy duty and medium duty truck and the van categories were all down on October 2024 results, however the light duty truck segment posted sales above those recorded for October last year.

Year-to-date total combined heavy vehicle sales are tracking 12.0 percent lower than last year, which equates to 5,131 less vehicles sold to the end of October this year than were sold across the same 10 months in 2024.

The hardest hit segment is the heavy duty trucks (prime movers) with 1,226 trucks delivered in October, 301 less trucks than were sold in October 2024. All up 11,789 trucks have been sold in 2025.

The Medium Duty Truck segment performed quite well in 2024, however has struggled since the start of 2025 with the segment posting the second largest percentage loss year-to-date and largest segment fall in October. Only 487 Medium Duty trucks were sold in the month of October 2025, that represents a significant 30.2 percent (-211 units) drop in sales over October 2024.

The shining light in the latest round of results is in the light duty segment.

As with the other truck segments, 2025 Light Duty truck sales have been down from the start of the year, when compared to 2024 results. However, October’s sales volumes have bettered the record breaking sales for October 2024 by three per cent. In all 1,353 light duty trucks were delivered this October, compared to 1,313 light duty trucks in October 2024.

Van sales in October were down 13.4 percent for the month of October – 132 less van sales in October 2025 compared to the same month in 2024. Year-to-date 8,830 new van sales have been recorded to the end of October, down 702 sales over the same period in 2024.
