Program gives automotive and engineering workers without qualifications opportunity to gain nationally recognised skills.
Workers in the automotive and engineering industry who do not have recognised qualifications now have the opportunity gain a Certificate III through a Queensland-based training program.
TAFE Queensland SkillsTech’s Trade Skills Assessment and Gap Training Program specifically targets workers with existing trade skills and experience but no formal qualifications.
TAFE Queensland business manager Keith Tonkies says the program is a great way for workers in the automotive and engineering industries who do not have Certificate III level qualifications to get nationally recognised skills at a lower cost than normal.
“Successful applicants contribute a nominal fee towards their training, paying a fraction of what it would normally cost to get a Certificate III qualification,” he says.
“The process involves recognition of prior learning, which is an assessment of existing skills, together with gap training to cover skills and competencies to gain that formal qualification.”
The program has positions available in heavy automotive (diesel fitting) and engineering (fabrication, mechanical, welding).
Tonkies says information sessions will be held at TAFE Queensland’s Acacia Ridge training centre south of Brisbane this month to allow potential applications to meet teachers and skills assessors and find out more about the program.
“If existing workers have any documentation about short courses or other relevant training previously undertaken, we encourage them to bring certified copies of these documents to the information evenings,” he says.
The information session on automotive (diesel fitting) will be held on February 24 from 5pm to 9pm.
Engineering will be covered on February 25 from 5pm to 9pm.
