Melbourne’s West Gate Bridge was the scene of severe traffic congestion early today after a semi-trailer lost its shipping container.
Four lanes were closed during peak-hour traffic when the truck’s load detached near the Bolte Bridge exit around 7.30am.
Traffic was at a standstill for over an hour, with up to a dozen cars sidelined on the freeway due to the crash while VicRoads and Victoria Police cleared the scene.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman says no one was injured and the truck driver is assisting police with their inquiries.
Laura Keys, who was driving to South Yarra from Williamstown, says traffic was at a standstill at the bridge, which took an hour to cross.
“A few weeks ago I was stuck on top of the Bolte for an hour during the evening peak because of a crash at Racecourse Road,” Keys says.
“It’s pretty frustrating that one accident on a major route can throw the entire city into traffic chaos for several of hours.”
