SCT goes green but quiet on detail

SCT orders new batch of environmentally friendly locomotives, but remains quiet on details of deal

September 22, 2010

Rail operator SCT Logistics has ordered a new batch of locomotives to meet growth projections, but it is remaining quiet on details of the deal.

SCT CEO Geoff Smith has confirmed the company has broken away from its traditional manufacturer and struck a deal with China Southern Railways and MTU Germany for the rolling stock.

After using Australian manufactured locomotives, Smith says SCT decided to source new stock from China. He declined to go into specifics about the units, but says they are environmentally friendly.

“These locomotives will be the most carbon friendly in Australia by a long way,” he says.

“This combined with the size and efficiency in which SCT operates its general freight trains will result in considerable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, significantly achieving further reductions for both SCT’s carbon footprint and that of our customers.”

Furthermore, Smith says he expects the new locomotives to achieve a superior performance rating to other units currently operating in Australia.
