Scania Green Truck dominance ended by Volvo FH Aero

The Volvo FH Aero has broken a run of Scania dominance in the Green Truck Award, with the Swedish manufacturer winning the award in seven of the last nine years

The Volvo FH Aero is continuing to establish itself as a key player in the next generation of fuel efficient trucks, and has claimed the 2025 Green Truck Award from German trade magazines Trucker and Verkehrs-Rundschau, which identifies the most fuel-efficient long-haul truck of each year through a comparative press test.

The FH Aero on test featured a 420hp D13 engine and Volvo’s I-Save package, along with its new Camera Monitoring system that improves aerodynamics.

The specific model recorded an average fuel consumption of 21.20 litres per 100 kilometres on the test route, which was a 343-kilometre journey along motorways and national roads in southern Germany.

It recorded an average speed of 80.14 km/h along its journey.

“I am so proud to see an external test confirming that our Volvo FH Aero really delivers superior fuel efficiency, saving CO2 and running costs for our customers every day”, says Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks.

“We will continue to innovate and introduce improvements of fuel efficiency which benefits both the climate and the productivity of transport companies. Fuel consumption represents a major part of the operational costs of our customers, so we know that our efforts make a difference.”

The FH Aero was introduced in early 2024. Its new aerodynamic cab design saves up to five per cent in fuel consumption and carbon emissions when compared to the regular Volvo FH.

President of Volvo Trucks Roger Alm has praised the “hat-trick” of award wins the FH Aero has now claimed.

“With the Green Truck win, Volvo Trucks has a hattrick,” he says.

First, we were the only brand to score five stars in Euro NCAP’s first ever safety test for trucks, then we became the biggest heavy truck brand in Europe in 2024, and now the Volvo FH Aero is the most fuel-efficient truck in an independent test – I am so proud of all these achievements!”

The Volvo FH Aero’s victory has marked a run of dominance from Scania in the Green Truck Award.

Scania models were named the Green Truck Award winner in six consecutive years from 2017-2022 and was then named winner again in 2024.

It also won in 2012 and 2014.

The 2023 winner that broke Scania’s six-year run was the DAF XF 450.
