Shearer keen to keep the momentum up in aftermath of tragedy
The South Australian Road Transport Association (SARTA) is engaging with State ministers to discuss safety measures on the South Eastern Freeway.
SARTA executive director Steve Shearer will meet with road safety minister Tony Piccolo on September 16 following the recent Transpacific crash that killed two people and injured one.
“SARTA welcomes this which will be the first opportunity that we have had to discuss the issues directly with ministers since the horrific multiple fatality on August 18,” Shearer says.
“Given the number of issue and scale of the problem, I anticipate that this meeting will need to go well beyond 30 minutes.
“We expect that we will also meet with Minister for Transport Stephen Mullighan at the same time or thereabouts following his return from his honeymoon.”
He has expressed concerns over the adjournment of coroner’s inquiry into the accident, which may take up to two years to complete.
“This may lose the opportunity to maintain real momentum in addressing these issues,” Shearer says.
The association has called for an emergency plan on the freeway where vehicles can be quickly cleared following an incident.
Shearer wants trucks to be closely monitored by safety cameras as they descend into Adelaide, with a measure automatically activated when trucks are considered to be in danger.
