Rural NSW roadworks to be completed by this weekend

Upgrades

Road upgrades on Cohens Bridge at Gunnedah are just days away from completion, with truckies and freight operators able to access the bridge from Saturday, June 7.

The bridge has undergone $10.6 million in upgrade works which began in July of last year. This included the safe removal and replacement of the existing concrete deck, preserving the bridge’s significant heritage value while strengthening its structural integrity.

While it reopens this weekend, further works in July will see a single lane closure while crew complete bridge painting work. There will be temporary traffic signals installed at this time.

The previous detour, as pictured above, will remain in place for heavy vehicles more than three metres wide due to lane width restrictions. The detour uses Kamilaroi Highway, Blue Vale and Old Blue Vale roads and adds around 14 minutes to travel times.

These last upgrades will be completed by late 2026, according to Transport for NSW.

Vehicles travelling under a Permit must not travel off the approved route listed in the permit unless an updated one is obtained from the NHVR, TfNSW says.
