RSRT tours Melbourne port operations

Three-person team inspects three business in Melbourne today

The Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal (RSRT) has conducted three site visits in Melbourne today.

The three-person panel inspected the workplaces of Butler Freight Services, Port Melbourne Containers, and DP World Melbourne as part of its inquiry into road transport in the wharf and port sector.

RSRT senior deputy president Lea Drake and tribunal members Steve Hutchins and Tim Squires have been responsible for the inquiry and today’s visits.

A spokesperson for the RSRT says the visits expanded on issues already provided in written and oral submissions.

The inspections are the first to take place in the wharf transport inquiry, with future inspections also likely in each of the other ports of focus: Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Fremantle.

The inquiry will produce a final report that the wider RSRT will consider with the option of issuing a road safety remuneration order.

This can stipulate terms and conditions on all parties – not just road transport operators – involved in port work.
