Rondo provides new alternative for couriers

The launch of the new Rondo seven seat wagon fires another shot in the ongoing war for the hearts, minds, and most importantly wallets, of family-operated courier businesses.

A brief test of the Rondo during the launch revealed it to be a competent performer, with no major flaws, although it is hardly likely to win too many titles as a drag racer.

Power comes from a willing 2.0 litre four cylinder petrol engine, although there is some talk of a diesel version arriving on our shores.

With a standard five-speed manual or optional four-speed self shifter, the gearing is well matched to the engine output, making this a better performer than the bare statistics would have you believe.

For those where safety is the number one concern, KIA is well on top of the game, offering a high level of equipment as standard, including ABS brakes with EBD, Traction Control and Stability Control, along with dual front airbags.

Also, the semi-bonneted design creates a reasonable crumple zone for front impact protection, without the extra length penalty of a full bonnet.

At the rear is a flat tailgate which rises to be parallel to the ground, making it easy to access the load area, while side doors open to approximately 80 degrees, for reaching into the front.

The driving position is comfortable, with plenty of head, leg and shoulder room, while the gear shift is positioned on an island at the base of the dash, creating more space between the seats.

Best of all for couriers, the two rows of seats fold into a hard, flat floor, making it easy to stack parcels and boxes.

This makes it a logical car for those who need a workhorse during the day, which can serve double duty as a family run around on weekends or after hours.

Unfortunately, it does not have an abundance of room for those looking to convert it to run on gas, however its petrol consumption was not excessive during the launch drive programme.

However, this can be easily overlooked by the purchase price, which starts at $24,990, and includes a five year factory warranty, although it is capped at 130,000 kilometres for business and commercial operators.

ATN will carry a full test of the Rondo in an upcoming edition.
