Livestock haulers and mining industry transporters are in line to benefit from upgrade works now underway on the Malbon River floodway in North West Queensland.
Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has started work on a project to deliver a wider, two-lane sealed crossing over the floodway on the Cloncurry-Dajarra Rd.
The new road will raise the floodway to improve flood resilience and also update the road’s geometry for better safety and visibility.
It is expected to enhance transport and freight efficiency by providing a reliable crossing that accommodates heavy freight vehicles, reducing delays and ensuring smoother operations for industries.
The works are jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments under the State Road Network Upgrades (SRNU) program.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Catherine King says the Commonwealth is pleased to be investing in regional Queensland.
“By delivering projects like upgrading the Malbon River crossing, we are ensuring regional Australians have the infrastructure they need to stay connected, grow their local economies, and build resilience against challenges like seasonal flooding,” King says.
Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg says the upgrade to the Malbon River floodway will deliver significant benefits to North West Queensland.
“By replacing the single-lane crossing with a wider, two-lane structure and improving flood resilience, we’re delivering safer, more reliable access for locals, industries, and tourists alike,” Mickelberg says.
“The Cloncurry–Dajarra Road is a critical link for the cattle grazing and mining industries, as well as for the remote communities and visitors who rely on it every day.”
