Residents ask for safety barriers but get temporary fix

Queensland residents petition for safety barriers on dangerous stretch of the M1, but will need to wait until 2011

Queensland residents have petitioned for safety barriers on a dangerous stretch of the M1 urban road corridor, but will need to wait until 2011 for a permanent solution.

Mudgeeraba MP Ros Bates tabled a petition last month calling for the installation of barriers between Nerang and Mudgeeraba on the Gold Coast due to the number of fatalities and accidents along the stretch of road.

According to the petition, there have been 10 fatalities and 64 hospitalisations in the area. Residents want barriers installed before the M1 is upgraded to six lanes.

“I am advised one of the early procedures as part of the construction work will be the placing of temporary safety barriers for the safety of workers and motorists,” Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace wrote in response.

“On completion of this project, opposing traffic flows will be separated by a permanent concrete barrier.”

The upgrades to the M1 began this month and are expected to be completed late next year.

During the works the speed limits on the motorway will be reduced to 80km/h.

The M1 connects Tugun near the NSW and Queensland borders to the Sunshine Coast.
