Remote road signs boost Gascoyne freight safety

New electronic variable message signs on Minilya–Lyndon and Quobba–Gnaraloo roads will allow real-time closures and alerts, improving safety and access across remote Gascoyne freight routes.

The Shire of Carnarvon has completed installation of new remote road signs on Minilya–Lyndon Road and the Quobba–Gnaraloo road network, strengthening safety and communication across some of the Gascoyne’s most isolated routes.

The electronic variable message signs allow Shire staff to activate road closures, restrictions and alerts instantly from the office, improving response times during weather events, flooding or maintenance works.

Road conditions across the Gascoyne can deteriorate rapidly, particularly on unsealed routes servicing pastoral properties, tourism sites and freight movements to coastal areas.

The ability to update road status in real time reduces the risk of heavy vehicles entering unsafe sections, improves compliance with closures and supports faster emergency response.

For freight operators and service providers travelling long distances, clear and timely information is critical to trip planning and risk management.

The Shire said the new remote road signs would help prevent vehicles from becoming stranded and reduce damage to vulnerable roads after rain events.

While modest in scale, the upgrade improves operational resilience on high-risk and remote roads that play a key role in connecting the region’s tourism, pastoral and supply chains.
