Two key regional aerodromes on South Australia’s West Coast will receive important safety upgrades, supporting aviation access for remote communities and the services that depend on them.
Elliston Aerodrome and Cleve Aerodrome Airport will share $360,000 through the latest round of the South Australian Supporting Regional Aviation Program, which has funded more than 60 projects since 2015.
Runway works to strengthen safety and reliability
The District Council of Cleve has received $60,000 to resheet the gravel runway and access road. The upgrade will strengthen structural integrity, support all-weather operations and improve year-round connectivity for essential services.
Elliston Aerodrome will undergo major works to its runway, apron and taxiway after receiving a $300,000 grant. The upgrade secures the future of an ageing facility relied upon for aeromedical flights, emergency operations and agricultural activity.
Aerodromes vital for emergency care and regional services
Chief Executive Jon Whelan from the Department for Infrastructure and Transport says aerodromes are critical assets across the state.
“We are ensuring these key infrastructure assets can continue to deliver better, safer and more reliable access to aviation services,” Whelan says.
He says the program plays an important role in connecting isolated communities to vital services.
SAAS MedSTAR Clinical Director Dr Andrew Pearce says the works will directly support life-saving care.
He says improved runways will help ensure patients on the Eyre Peninsula can reach Adelaide hospitals faster in emergencies.
Upgrades also support agriculture and local economies
District Council of Elliston Director Luke Moane says the upgrades provide peace of mind for residents who rely on services such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Angel Flight.
He says improvements will also support agricultural industries by strengthening transport links that underpin regional productivity.
The grants program will open again in early 2026, with projects required to be completed by 30 June 2027.
