R&N Haulage had to restructure the business after rates were slashed by more than half during the GFC

Western Australian firm R&N Haulage was forced to restructure its business after savage cuts to its freight rates during the global financial crisis.
R&N Director Nicole Leeson says customers dropped the kilometre rate they were paying by more than half.
“We were getting $4.80 for a single truck trailer and within two weeks of the global financial crisis they dropped it to $2 a kilometre,” Leeson says.
“We then had to restructure our business because we couldn’t compete with $2 a kilometre.”
Leeson, who grew up in a trucker’s family, believes times have become tough lately with the mining boom straining smaller operators.
However, the woman who pulled her and her father’s company out of debt and has taken over the running of the operation, says persistence is the key to staying atop hardship.
