RA announces John Shaw Medal winner

The road body has released the details of this year’s John Shaw Medal winner

Roads Australia (RA) has released the winner of its annual John Shaw Medal winner for 2022 as this year’s winner makes more transport industry history.

The Northern Territory’s first infrastructure commissioner in Louise McCormick is the winner of this year’s John Shaw Medal.

McCormick becomes the second woman to win the award and is the first Northern Territory-based recipient of the medal.

McCormick was announced as the winner at the 2022 John Shaw dinner, which recognised 70 years since the foundation of the RA’s forerunner organisation in the Australian Road Federation (ARF).

“McCormick’s impact throughout Northern Australia has been incredible significant,” RA says.

“As the Northern Territory’s infrastructure commissioner, her leadership benefits the entire community and economy, making the area safer, more accessible and better able to do business.”

McCormick has worked with industry and peak bodies including the Aboriginal Land Councils and Traditional Owners to push transport agendas through in a respectful way.

As general manager of transport and civil services in the Northern Territory government, RA says McCormick was responsible for 22,000 kilometres of roads.

RA says McCormick helped implement a new rolling upgrade program for strategic transport corridors over longer periods of time that improved the accessibility and affordability of works to create certainty around the project pipeline.

RA says this move allowed the industry to provide more sustainable jobs while training and employing mor Indigenous Australian people from remote communities.

McCormick is also the deputy chair of the Austroads Board and a member of the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB), making her a worthy winner of RA’s John Shaw Medal.
