Volvo announces new battery production facility

The Swedish manufacturing corporation plan to develop a facility that will help decarbonise commercial transport.

Volvo Group has announced plans to build a large-scale electric battery production site in Sweden in an effort to meet global demand for commercial batteries.

President and CEO of the Volvo Group Martin Lundstedt says the decision is about helping to decarbonise the transport sector.

“We aim to lead the transition to a decarbonized transport system and have the long-term ambition to offer our customers solutions that are 100 percent fossil free. There is a strong demand from our customers already today, and by 2030, it is our ambition that at least 35 percent of the products we sell are electric”, says Lundstedt.

The Skaraborg region, in the municipality of Mariestad in southern Sweden, has been selected as a potential location for the site due to its proximity to both to Volvo headquarters in Gothenburg and their current main powertrain plant in Skövde.

Volvo says they plan to gradually increase the production capacity of the proposed facility, with an aim to reach full large-scale capacity by 2030.

The batteries will be made with commercial applications specifically in mind, to be used for vehicles such as electric buses, trucks and construction equipment.
