Truck manufacturing, so long the preserve of Australia’s eastern states, is now a Western Australian concern as well with the launch of Bis Industries’ mine haulage vehicle, Rexx.

Developed and built by Bis subsidiary Powertrans, Rexx is unlikely to take to open roads very often but Bis believes it makes a compelling off-road case to miners – its 35km range said to be four times that of conventional dump trucks.

While Rexx has been years in the planning, its arrival is timely as the mining and resources sector’s rebound gathers pace.

It has been built to carry a 160 tonne payload, and will form part of Bis’ suite of bespoke load and haul solutions, which also includes Dual Powered Road Trains, providing a "highly competitive, integrated mine haulage solution" for its mining customers.

Speaking at the product launch in Perth, Bis CEO Brad Rogers dubbed Rexx as a game changer for mine haulage, "incorporating the best features of long-haul road trains and short haul mine trucks".

"Rexx’s robust and simple design leverages our existing knowledge and resources," Rogers continues.

"This has meant we were able to keep our manufacturing costs low, allowing Bis to deliver savings to customers through our service delivery model."

"At Bis, we are driven by bringing technology and innovation to our customers to deliver real value. We are very excited about the opportunity that Rexx creates for a whole range of mining operations in Australia and internationally."

Rexx has been designed to operate on narrower, lower specification roads.

"The design offers a smoother ride and better visibility for operators and dramatically improved tyre management. Rexx has also been designed for ease of maintenance," the company says.

"Rexx’s greater distance capability eliminates the need for double handling and its associated risks.

"Designed with the highest safety requirements in mind, Rexx is equipped with Bis’ fatigue management system, as well as 360 degree view cameras and reversing cameras for greater hazard management."

Multi-axle design and utilises conventional road-train tyres that are more durable, cheaper and safer to replace.

Rexx uses 20 tyres that are much smaller and cheaper than conventional haul truck tyres.

This allows for a safer and simplified tyre maintenance process, and offer redundancy because the vehicle can still operate if a tyre goes out of service unlike conventional dump trucks.
