MANs European eTruck trials commence

Nine Austrian companies to trial MAN eTGM offerings as part of German maker's electric development

Fully electric MAN trucks have been delivered to nine partner companies from the Austrian Council for Sustainable Logistics (CNL) for testing in everyday applications over several months.

Each MAN eTGM, based on existing MAN TGMs, has been tailored for each company’s specific needs for authentic testing conditions.

MAN Truck and Bus says it will “incorporate the experience gained together with the CNL’s partner companies” into refining the mass development of its electric trucks.

The first of the eTGMs was handed over at a ceremony at the MAN’s Steyr electric truck production site recently, which marked the starting point of the electric trials.

“The time has come, the first MAN electric trucks are on the road – in everyday use by our customers. From now on, they deliver, for example, drinks, food, or vehicle parts – local emissions-free and almost silent,” MAN Truck & Bus chairman Joachim Drees says.

In coming months, the companies will test the vehicles under authentic conditions in their specific transport and logistics applications. MAN claims it will then take on board information from the customers’ practical experiences in routine conditions to assist in its development of sustainable logistics solutions.

For the German company, it marks “another milestone on the road to electrified urban distribution transport – a mission in which zero-emissions and low levels of noise pollution play an increasingly important role”.

The CNL, affiliated with the Centre for Global Change and Sustainability at Vienna University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, comprises 18 Austrian retail, logistics and manufacturing firms working towards sustainable logistics.

The ‘eTruck’ field tests are part of a ‘Megawatt’ project supported by the Austrian government’s Climate and Energy Fund as part of its “Lighthouses of Electric Mobility” program.
