Fuso airbag fault leads to broad recall

More than 14,000 recalled over wiring fault that could keep airbag from deploying

A total of 14,342 Fuso Canters have been recalled by their manufacturer over a wiring arrangement that could prevent the vehicle airbags from working in a collision.

The fault affects Fuso Canters sold in Australia between March 1, 2011 and November 30, 2017.

According to the Product Safety website run by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, the wiring harness of the SRS electric control unit could be severed if the vehicle is in a severe collision.

The recall comes after over 600 Western Star trucks were recalled over a fault in the brake lights that could cause them not to illuminate when the brakes are applied.

“If the SRS electronic control unit is severed in a collision it may stop the airbag deployment signals from being transferred to the modules,” the product safety site says.

“In the worst case scenario the airbag may not deploy, posing a greater risk of injury to the vehicle occupant in an accident.”

A statement released by Fuso says the recall will affect “most” Fuso models sold during this timeframe,  adding that it would be in contact with owners directly.

“During extensive crash testing for its electric eCanter model in Japan, Fuso engineers discovered that a very specific crash impact could potentially sever a wire connected to the truck’s ECU and therefore potentially prevent the airbags from deploying,” the company says.

“The simple fix requires technicians to move the wire slightly and secure it, a process estimated to take no more than 20 minutes.”

“The recall does not relate to the truck’s airbag units,, which are supplied by Daicel Safety Systems,” Fuso says.

Owners of affected vehicles will be asked to contact an authorised Fuso dealership for an inspection and repair of the vehicle.
