Kenworth, Mercedes see April sales spike

Mercedes-Benz more than doubled its April heavy vehicle sales year on year, TIC data reveals

Sales statistics for April released by the Truck Industry Council earlier this week show a spike in popularity for Mercedes-Benz in the Heavy Duty sector.

As detailed by ATN yesterday, a slight dip in the total number of April vehicle sales, to 3,151 from 3,447 in March follow a pattern set last year, Truck Industry Council (TIC) T-Mark statistics show – meaning any calls about the end of the sales boom look premature.

The April 2018 level was well above the 2,517 trucks sold in April 2017, with much of this due to a lift in the heavy duty segment – with 1,156 heavy duty vehicles sold in April 2018, up from 750 in April 2017.

Mercedes-Benz was the biggest mover in April’s Heavy Duty sales with 115 vehicles sold, up from 71 in March and 50 in April 2017 – while market leader Kenworth extended its lead with 250 vehicles sold, up from 212 in March.

April sales were lower in the Medium Duty segment, with positions remaining largely unchanged month on month - with Isuzu still well ahead of its competition, with 273 vehicles sold, compared with Hino's 171.

But a year on year comparison reveals a shift in fortunes for MAN, with its 70 vehicles sold in April 2018 well above the 9 it sold in April 2017.

Light Duty truck sales were also lower overall, from 994 total sales in March to 927 in April, with lesser lights Renault seeing a lift from 18 to 37 and Fiat from 38 to 43 - while Mercedes-Benz lost almost half, from 60 to 33 in April.

But the reverse was true in Van sales, despite lower volumes overall - Mercedes kept its position on top of the leader board with 146 vans sold, down from 185 in March, while Renault dropped from 155 vans sold to 81.

The drop was not enough to see it lose second place on the ladder, however, with Ford also seeing a drop from 89 to 68, while Volkswagen dropped from 42 in March to 24.

Only Fiat saw growth in the month, up from 44 in March to 59 in April.
