Hino launches XL range at Work Truck Show

With a strong emphasis on chrome, Hino’s new heavy range, the XL, was unveiled at the 2018 Work Truck Show in Indianapolis this week.

Powered by Hino’s A09 turbo diesel 8.9-litre inline 6-cylinder engine boasting a B10 life of 1 million miles (1.6 million kilometres), the XL focuses on the heavy rigid and heavy duty prime mover segments, or US classes 7 and 8.

"Considering our remarkable success in Class 4-7 in North America, and our growing global presence in the Class 8 market, entering the North American heavy duty segment makes for the next logical step.  Not to mention our customers and our dealer network have been asking for this for some time," Hino Trucks North America president and CEO Yoshinori Noguchi says of the vehicles due in US production early next year.

The Hino XL Series will be offered in a host of straight truck and tractor configurations ranging from a GVWR, or gross vehicle mass, of 33,000 to 60,000 lb (15-27 tonne) and GCWR, or gross combination mass up to 66,000 lb (30 tonne), with maximum performance of 360 hp (268 kW) and 1,150 lb ft (1,559 Nm) torque.

With vocational applications in mind, it is available wheelbases of up to 304 inches (7.7 metres) and tandem axle and fifth wheel configurations.

The lineup features new active safety solutions with electronic stability control (standard on prime mover) and collision mitigation systems, innovative payload management suspension options, and a "body builder friendly" optimised design "engineered for maximum ease of serviceability".

Air-ride cab and driver’s seat, hands-free Bluetooth audio/calling, steering wheel controls, LED headlights, cruise control, and air conditioning will be among standard equipment on every 2020 model year Hino XL7 and XL8, Hino says.

Comment has been sought from Hino Australia on the likelihood of the XL range being seen locally.
