Electric propulsion was to the fore in the latest European Transport Award for Sustainability.

MAN’s conventional-looking eTruck, Mercedes-Benz’s futuristic eTruck rigid and Volkswagen’s e-Crafter took out the major awards, while BPW Group also got into the act with its eTransport electrically driven axle.

The European Transport Prize for Sustainability is awarded every two years by German media enterprise Huss-Verlag and industry publication Transport, and is aimed at strengthening companies in the commercial vehicle sector in acting sustainably.

The European Transport Award for Sustainability is awarded by a jury with representatives of Huss-Verlag, Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics, Kravag-Logistic and the German Association of Postal Service Providers (BdKEP).

According to MAN, along with electric drive, auxiliary units such as power steering, air compressors and air-conditioning systems are also electrically driven, which "makes demand-dependent, energy-saving steering possible".

"MAN Truck & Bus and the Austrian consortium, Council for Sustainable Logistics (CNL), have entered into an agreement to jointly test and optimise fully electric trucks. Production of the vehicles will take place at MAN’s site in Steyr, Austria," MAN says of the award.

"As early as the start of 2018, nine fully electric MAN distribution trucks will be put through their paces in everyday use.

Production of an initial small series is planned from the end of 2018 onwards, while at the start of 2021, MAN will begin series production of electric trucks for urban distribution transport and will thereby make a further significant contribution to reducing emissions and noise in urban centres.

"The Mercedes-Benz eTruck won first prize in the category Concept Trucks: 25 tonne gross vehicle weight, a range of up to 200 km and super quiet operation on the road with zero emissions," the company says.

"The eTruck offers an impressive economical and environmentally friendly concept."

Meanwhile, in the cab and in yet another win for the Volkswagen Group, Scania took a gong for its With Pulse & Glide cruise control upgrade.

"With this latest version of Scania Cruise Control with Active Prediction [CCAP], the driver has more customisation options in driving modes to save even more fuel," the company says.

"Scania CCAP uses topographical map data and GPS technology to determine the characteristics of the road three kilometres ahead," Scania says.

"Based on this data, it selects gearing and speed strategies for the lowest possible fuel consumption. The vehicle uses advanced algorithms to calculate how it for instance can use its kinetic energy to Eco-roll with the gears in neutral."

Scania explains that with Pulse & Glide, the Eco-roll system can be used on gradients that under normal circumstances are not steep enough to maintain speed. By being able to increase speed – Pulse – and then freewheel – Glide – "the collective time that the vehicle uses Eco-roll can be considerably increased. On suitable stretches of road, the new function alone can contribute to fuel savings of up to 0.5 per cent".

"The award is yet another affirmation of the innovative strengths of Scania’s new truck generation," says Germany and Austrial MD Peter Hornig says.

"All technological developments that enable fuel savings contribute positively to sustainability."
