Transport Certification Australia (TCA) expects Telstra’s recent acquisition of GPS and fleet management technology provider MTData will pave the way for better use of in-vehicle technologies in Australia.

MTData and its wholly-owned subsidiary, Transport Compliance Services (TCS), which received TCA certification in 2009, were officially taken over by Telstra for an undisclosed sum last week.

MTData's product will operate on Telstra's telecommunications network to offer real-time data to businesses.

Telstra executive director global products Michelle Bendschneider says the acquisition will bolster the company’s connected vehicle offering delivered in the IoT footprint.

"MTData will bring fresh expertise to our business, including the technical know-how and software expertise to help fast track our Enterprise Connected Vehicle offerings," Bendschneider notes.

"It’s part of our goal to build out our IoT ecosystem for our customers.

"It also supports Telstra’s focus on being a leading provider of innovative technology solutions for customers in Australia and globally."

TCA acting CEO Gavin Hill says the acquisition recognises the "long-standing commitment" of both companies to support the use of telematics in Australia.

"TCS has a range of devices installed across the Australian vehicle fleet that are able to satisfy TCA requirements, and which enable the co-location of commercial and regulatory apps through the National Telematics Framework," Hill says.

"TCS has confirmed to TCA that approved devices already installed in vehicles, together with certified apps administered through the National Telematics Framework, will continue to be supported.

"Importantly, for industry and government users that rely on certified apps provided by TCS, established operating arrangements will not be impacted."

"TCA looks forward to working with TCS and Telstra to further advance the use of in-vehicle technologies to deliver improved productivity, efficiency and safety outcomes through an open technology market."
