The truck range will feature at least 16 new models for a variety of roles
Swedish truck maker Scania has revealed more details on its next-generation truck range, confirming a number of vehicle specifications.
The new range, which launched last month in Paris and features a newly designed ‘S’ cab, will ship in at least 16 different variations ranging from the 410hp R 410 model all the way up to the 730hp S 730 model.
While an Australian rollout hasn’t been confirmed – it may be up to three years away – the new heavy-duty range is currently being tested by ATN staff in Europe.
The tested R Series range includes the previously mentioned R 410, four R 450 variants, three R 500 models, and an R 730.
The S Series starts with the 450hp S 450, and moves upwards through two S 500 models, two S 580 variants, and tops out with two S 730 trucks.
Full specifications are below.
All models in the next-generation lineup feature a Euro 6 powerplant that, Scania says, offers a three per cent fuel consumption reduction thanks to a new engine management system and overhauled installation.
The total fuel savings are around five per cent, however, when aerodynamics and intelligent function improvements are taken into account.
Powertrains
New in the range is a 500hp inline 13-litre engine, which sits on top of Scania’s four 13-litre engine lineup.
Using SCR for exhaust after treatment, Scania’s head of engine development Björn Westman says the new engine fills a sweet spot for the company.
“Our inline 13-litre engines perform fantastically well with only SCR and a robust turbocharger featuring fixed geometry,” Westman says.
“With this addition we are, from a power perspective, offering a concept that appeals to a large number of customers in a wide range of applications.”
Also new in the powertrain is the addition of a lay shaft brake system as standard in the automated Scania Opticruise gearboxes.
Scania says “instead of using synchro rings to synchronise the different speeds of the countershaft and main shaft in the gearbox during gearshifts, as in most conventional gearboxes, Scania uses a lay shaft brake when upshifting.”
“This is possible thanks to Scania’s approach with fully integrated powertrains and means that the shafts synchronise with each other significantly faster and that the next pinion – that is to say the next gear – can engage almost immediately.”
The truck maker says the gearshift time has been shortened by 0.4 seconds, or almost half.
It also means turbo pressure can be better maintained, allowing for the upshift to come with greater power.
For drivers who utilise cruise control, the new Scania trucks feature an overhauled Adaptive Cruise Control System.
The new system can now handle speeds down to a standstill.
