Regional Volvo fuel challengers on their marks

Competitors will complete challenges to test who is the most fuel efficient driver

Volvo’s Fuelwatch Challenge bandwagon just keeps on rolling, with the Asia Pacific final set to begin.

There are 17 finalists from across the Asia Pacific region preparing to take on the fuel economy challenge in the city of Hua Hin, Thailand, over two days from September 16 to 17.

The event is known internationally as Fuelwatch and pits truck drivers against each other in identical vehicles on a set course to see who can drive in the most fuel efficient manner.

There have been more than 15,000 people to date from around the region who have competed.

Scott Chandler from Connect Trading Transport will represent Australia.

There will be drivers from 10 countries battling it out in Thailand for a berth at the global fuel challenge final.

For the first time there will be four women competing, reflecting the increasing diversity of the global transport industry.

“We are very excited to hold the 2015 edition of the Volvo Trucks Asia Pacific Fuelwatch Challenge,” Volvo Trucks Asia Oceania president Christophe Martin says.

“As one of our mainstay events, it continues to attract the very best in the industry. It is also great to see more and more female drivers demonstrating their skills to optimise fuel efficiency at the highest level, and to contest for the top prize.”

Martin says the Fuelwatch Challenge reflects Volvo’s commitment to fuel efficiency.

“Participants of the Fuelwatch Challenge return home as ambassadors of fuel efficient driving, and we look forward to supporting them beyond the competition to influence positive change in their home markets,” he says.

The winner of the regional final gets to compete in the global final and will also receive a mysterious sounding “personalised Volvo experience”.

ATN technical editor Matt Wood competed in the Australian final held recently at Anglesea, Victoria.
