Benz backs community schemes supporting children and youth

Paediatric care and apprentice development central to vehicle-maker’s Neighbourhood initiative

Mercedes-Benz Truck & Bus has launched a new community scheme linking it with two Melbourne-headquartered community organisations.

Brainwave Australia and Les Twentyman’s 20th Man Fund are key partners in the manufacturer’s Neighbourhood initiative was launched by general manager Justin Whitford.

“The new initiative will be a key focus of our entire business, our staff and our customers,” Whitford says.

“It’s not just about supporting financially but genuinely assisting the work and services these fantastic organisations provide.”

Brainwave Australia is the nation’s only charity which focuses on supporting children and families affected by paedeatric brain injuries and illnesses.

“The Neighbourhood initiative goes to strengthen the importance of the group’s connection to community and cements its commitment to grassroots support,” Brainwave chairman David Blackle says.

Brainwave gained from Freightliner generosity in April when that make donated $16,000 raised from the charity auction of a limited edition Harley-Davidson customised Coronado 114.

Les Twentyman’s 20th Man Fund supports homeless, disadvantaged and disconnected youth, built on the vision of giving every young person a future free of poverty, abuse and violence.

“You can’t put a price on giving a young person a future and all of our partners play an important role in not only allowing us to continue our services but also, and importantly, allow us to grow and expand our service outreach,” 20th Man Fund general manager Wayne Owens says.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks has developed an apprentice development program which will allow 20th Man candidates to learn and develop the skills required to be a world leader in the automotive and transport industry.

It will support both organisations via financial contributions and ongoing fundraising activities along with in-kind contributions from staff volunteering and skilled-assistance.

“We are extremely excited with the Neighbourhood initiative, which is dedicated to better supporting key community organisations and mandated with driving positive community outcomes,” Whitford says.
