Cummins, Daimler and Foton team up in China

New 12-litre Cummins engine to power Daimler-Foton heavy duty truck

Three giants of the trucking world have joined forces to produce a new truck in China.

Cummins, Foton and Daimler will between them produce a new model called the Foton Daimler Auman GTL “Super Power” truck.

The Auman GTL will be powered by the new Cummins ISG engine, and be built in China under a 50-50 joint venture between Daimler and Foton.

Foton and Cummins had previously teamed up with the Cummins ISF light-duty engine platform introduced in 2008.

The 2.8-litre and 3.8-litre Cummins ISF powers the four models of light-duty Fotons sold in Australia.

“The cooperation on ISG is a natural extension of the successful integration of Cummins ISF engine and Foton trucks,” Cummins Group Vice President – China and Russia Steve Chapman says.

Foton General Manager Wang Jinyu, says Foton and Cummins have worked together to “synchronise the development of the Cummins ISG engine and the new GTL ‘Super Power’ truck for best integration”.

“We aim at setting a new benchmark in the high-end heavy-duty truck market through breakthrough technologies,” he adds.

Cummins says the ISG heavy-duty engine platform is an in-line 6 cylinder, available in 11 litre and 12 litre models to meet a “broad variety of global market requirements and emissions standards”.

It says design and development of the engine have been led by a team in the US. The platform is capable of Euro VI emissions standards.

At the recent International Truck, Trailer and Equipment Show held in Melbourne, a Foton spokesman told transport media that heavier Foton trucks “may make their way into Australia eventually”.

More immediately, the company had been “working very hard” on introducing a small tipper into this market.
