Isuzu releases S models with more grunt

Limited edition models sport a bigger engine and a choice of transmissions

Isuzu are getting a little sporty with the release of three new higher power limited edition S models.

Just how limited this limited edition will be depends on customer response, but the FRD 600-S, the FSD 700-S and the FSD-850-S are all shunted along by a 7.8 litre Sitec Series 3 engine that puts out 191kW at 2,400 rpm and develops 761Nm of torque.

That’s a jump of 15kW and 55Nm over what has been available in the past.

Aside from the bigger engine, all S models come with a choice of three transmissions, 6-speed manual, Isuzu AMT or Allison LCT2500 automatic.

Suspension wise the S also gets Hendrickson airbags on the rear. Outside the limited edition models pick up some bling in the way of chrome badging as well as Alcoa alloy rims, and LED day time running lamps.

Those wanting to enjoy some tunes on the road will be happy to hear that an improved speaker package is also a part of the S upgrade as well as steering wheel mounted controls for the Digital Audio Visual unit.

Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) Chief Engineer Simon Humphries anticipates that these will appeal to operators in a number of different roles.

“The new models will appeal to tilt tray operators who often tow a trailer to carry additional cars, and need the extra power for the job,” Humphries says.

“Similarly the additional power will benefit owners who fit full size van or tautliner bodies with very large frontal areas – these customers may wish for more power to maintain highway speeds in windy conditions.

“The combination of a higher power engine and either Allison full automatic transmission or Isuzu AMT will appeal to any operator doing a lot of work in metropolitan and urban environments in heavy start and stop traffic.”

The company has made plain that it is keen not to be resting on its laurels

“The Limited Edition models are very competitively priced yet feature a number of impressive additions, particularly the alloy wheels and DRLs,” IAL Marketing Manager Jeff Birdseye says.

“Those who spend long hours in the cabin will also appreciate the premium speakers and satellite navigation – we expect these models to be quickly snapped-up by value-conscious buyers who also want to stand out from the crowd.”

GVM ratings for the new line-up range from 11,00kg to 14,000kg, while GCM ratings are from 16,000kg to 20,000kg depending on model and transmission selected.
