Mercedes-Benz vans finish year on high

Mercedes-Benz vans record an increase over the 2007 figure, despite the economic collapse

With the release of the European 2008 sales results, Mercedes-Benz vans have done the seemingly impossible: recorded an increase over the 2007 figure, despite the economic collapse in the final quarter.

Although the worldwide figure was slightly lower than 2007 – 287,205 compared to 289,073 – in most markets the year-on-year result showed increases, even if only modest.

For example, in the German market, sales actually increased by 505 units to 71,763, while in the United Kingdom the increase was more substantial, growing by 2,900 to 31,105 units for the year.

Australia was one of the big improvers, with an increase of 5 percent over the 2007 level, culminating in the sale of 2,329 models across the Sprinter van and cab-chassis range.

Wilfried Porth, head of Mercedes-Benz Vans globally, says the results reflects demand for the van range, leaving him confident sales will begin to pick up as the world emerges from the current financial turmoil.
