MAN Trucks is studying how to significantly cut the fuel consumption of heavy vehicles with its latest streamlined concept truck.
On display at the 2010 IAA show in Hanover, Germany, the MAN Concept S truck underwent plenty of design changes through wind tunnel testing before engineers settled on the final shape.
Featuring a more aggressive rearward rake than most cab over trucks, the Concept S and a specially designed trailer cuts fuel consumption by up to 25 percent compared to a ‘standard’ 40-tonne single trailer combination.
The design study also throws an interesting problem squarely at the feet of European legislators, to retain current loading capacity the aerodynamic combination is longer than the current units, and could only go into service if traffic authorities increase the maximum length of a single trailer combination.
