Hino has marked a new milestone in Australian acceptance of its fuel-saving and emissions-reducing hybrid trucks with the delivery of a 30th Hino Hybrid to TNT Express Australia.

TNT Express now has Australia's largest fleet of Hino Hybrid 300 Series diesel-electric trucks - the largest hybrid truck fleet in the country.

Other major Australian buyers of Hino Hybrid 300 Series trucks include grocery and confectionary companies, local councils and a leading network of collection and retail stores.

Hino Motors global president Yoshio Shirai handed the keys of the latest hybrid truck to the Managing Director of TNT Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands, Bob Black.

TNT pioneered the use of a hybrid truck fleet in Australia, commissioning its first Hino Hybrids early in 2008.

It now has Hino Hybrid fleets in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.

Hino Australia President Steve Lotter says TNT has been quick to grasp the environmental and fuel-saving benefits of Hino hybrid technology.

"The company's real-world experience in high-use applications showed each Hino Hybrid in its fleets reduces greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 1,600 kilograms of CO2 a year," he says.

"The transport industry's emphasis on being green has grown enormously in the last couple of years, with companies like TNT leading the way by increasing the size of their overall hybrid fleet.

"This is a great endorsement of both the benefits and suitability of Hino's hybrid trucks for Australian operations."

Hino's delivery of more hybrid trucks to TNT comes as it introduces yet another innovation - Hino's second hybrid model and the first diesel-electric hybrid truck in Australia with automatic transmission.

The new Hino Hybrid 300 Series automatic uses the same power sources as the manual-transmission model - drawing power from a 100kW diesel engine and 36kW electric motor, according to driving conditions and driver inputs, to optimise fuel use and minimise emissions.

The new automatic transmission truck offers significant fuel savings compared with an equivalent diesel automatic truck.
