No downturn in sight as truck sales boom

Despite concerns the ever-expanding bubble of truck sales might start shrinking as diesel prices continue to rise, customers continue to flock to dealerships in record numbers.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Isuzu is the undisputed champion, breaking the magical 1000 units in a month barrier for the first time as its year-to-date total reached 4399 sales.

In any other market, Hino and Mitsubishi Fuso would have been satisfied with their respective sales figures of 617 and 376, however they were well shaded by their arch-rival’s astonishing sales result.

In the big truck class, often regarded as the market ‘barometer’, Kenworth remains top of the pops, with 215 sales, however in a display of just how popular Isuzu has become, the Japanese manufacturer sold 121 heavy trucks, shading Western Star by 19 units.

As predicted by Iveco MD Mark Strambi in his exclusive interview with ATN this month, the Italian manufacturer improved to fourth on the list, with 74 sales, just behind Freightliner’s 79 units.

The gap between Isuzu and Hino was closest in the medium duty sector, where Isuzu sold 488 to Hino’s 341, while Fuso remained third on 119 sales.

In the light duty sector, it was a similar story, with Isuzu reaching 422, compared to Hino on 245 and Mitsubishi Fuso just behind with 212 sales.
