Lusty EMS helps walk out the rubbish for Thiess

Thiess Waste Management has turned to trailer manufacturer Lusty EMS to help deliver improvements in productivity and safety at its Brisbane refuse collection via a fleet of seven new aluminium walking floor trailers.

Thiess is a name synonymous with Australia’s construction history, having played a leading hand in the development of Australia’s most essential infrastructure networks, including projects ranging from highways, airports, dams, ports, hospitals and more recently telecommunications.

Just as impressive is Thiess’ role in developing Australia’s natural resource sectors, in particular its pioneering work in establishing trade relationships with Japan and China.

Today, Thiess has grown to become Australasia’s biggest construction and mining services company and has more recently expanded to include an integrated multi-disciplinary service to commercial, industrial and government sectors.

According to Thiess’ Eastern Region Plant Operations Manager, James Perrett, the decision to approach Lusty EMS to develop its new trailers was straight forward.

“The Lusty EMS name is well established and they do great aluminium and engineering work,” he says.

“In partnering with Lusty EMS we were confident they could deliver on all our requirements. Their customer service is also strong giving us the peace of mind of knowing they would stand by the product should any issues arise.”

The five compactor-style trailers have 88-cubic-metre capacity, while the two open-top heavy duty walking floor aluminium trailers offer 97-cubic-metre capacity. Being coupled to powerful prime movers the aluminium moving floor enables faster turnaround times.

“One of the great benefits of these trailers is that they have the floor walking forward, so they can load and unload much faster at the transfer stations and landfill sites – when you are loading approximately 24 tonnes, you can imagine the time that can be saved,” Perrett says.

Extra features such as ABS with EBS (electronically controlled braking and stability system) have also been installed for improved safety and performance.

“It was very important for us to have the safety content built into the trailers, in fact it was a top priority,” he says.

According to Lusty EMS National Sales Manager, Rick Child, the trailers are designed with safety in mind.

“The centre of gravity can be much higher than a tipper, as the moving floor trailers are normally built to a maximum height of 4.3 meters. If the trailer starts to roll, the EBS along with the ABS applies the brakes to keep it stable,” he says.

Other features of the trailers include a rounded front wall to assist in equal distribution of the weight over the prime mover, as well as long life, galvanised steel rear frames on the compactor units.
The delivery of the seven trailers early this year brings to 12 the number of Lusty EMS trailers that Thiess has servicing the greater Brisbane metropolitan area.

“We were delighted to customise the walking floor trailers and to be working with Thiess again after supplying them with five trailers some years ago,” Child says.

“It’s also extremely pleasing that Thiess is supporting Australian manufacturing – Lusty EMS is looking forward to a continued strong relationship with Thiess.”
