New Triton diesel impresses on debut

The latest version of Mitsubishi’s Triton ute was released to the press last week, and promises to fill an important gap for the company.

Powered by a 2.5 litre four cylinder turbo-diesel, backed up by either a five-speed manual or a four-speed auto, the Triton retains the challenging looks of its sibling, but now competes in the two-wheel-drive class.

Despite its unique styling, the Triton offers plenty of space for five adults, although tall drivers will wish the steering wheel had reach adjustment, as well as height.

Cruise control is a welcome addition to the mix, and was given a good work out on the launch programme, which took in the hills around Adelaide, before heading to the coastline and then returning to the airport.

While the cars were running an empty tray during the launch the stiff suspension settings showed up in a sometimes bouncy ride, however with a bit of weight over the rear axle they should be fine.

The engine is a wonderfully torquey unit, and the gear ratios are amtched almost perfectly, which means even fully loaded the Triton should be a reasonable performer.

A combination of no load and the relatively short distance – under 300 kilometres for the day – meant no fuel figures were available, however the torque-laden nature of the engine means they should be respectable.

Watch for a full test of the Triton in an upcoming edition of the magazine.
