Isuzu AMT reduces driver fatigue

Looking to significantly reduce driver fatigue and improve productivity? Then take a close look at the Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) offered by Isuzu.

During a road test of an Isuzu NNR equipped with the intelligent transmission for an upcoming edition of ATN, it became apparent how much easier it made driving.

While the driver still has the option to manually control the gearbox, the onboard computer is able to make precise gearshifts to maximise economy and reduce emissions.

The secret of the operation is an electronically controlled twin plate clutch, which enables faster and smoother gearshifts than a traditional three pedal driving set-up.

Using a number of sensors to read variables such as road speed, throttle position and engine speed, the computer is able to select the correct gear for performance and economy.

In ‘manual’ mode the driver is able to shift gears via the stubby control lever, providing a sequential manual shift between gears, that eliminates riding the clutch, particularly in hill-starts.

There is also a fail-safe in case of electronic failure allows the truck to limp home, or at least to meet a service vehicle, without leaving the operator stranded in the middle of nowhere – or to get out of peak hour traffic if needed.

Regardless of the total vehicle weight, the system made smooth and accurate shifts, leaving the operator to concentrate on what is happening around them on the road.

After a week of driving, the general feeling was that the updated transmission made work easier, along with the improved sound-proofing and driver comforts such as airconditioning, upgraded seats and height and reach adjustable steering.
