Goodyear expands Duraseal self-sealing tyre range

Goodyear has launched four new commercial truck tyres with Duraseal technology that features a built in sealant that stops air

Goodyear has launched four new commercial truck tyres with Duraseal technology that features a built in sealant that stops air escaping from a puncture, which is perfect for vehicles that operate in conditions where punctures are a regular and expensive occurrence, such as the construction, mining and waste management industries.

David Hamilton, Goodyear commercial product manager, says the Goodyear-patented technology benefits customers as it will reduce punctures and cost associated with down time and tyre repairs.

“Duraseal tyres are built with an extra ‘belt’ in their tread package made of a special yellow gel-like rubber compound which, when an object such as a nail penetrates it, flows into the puncture and creates an air-tight seal,” Hamilton says.

“It can seal up to a 6mm tread puncture and it can do it again and again without the tyre needing to be repaired or the sealant needing to be re-applied. If the object that caused the puncture is removed, the sealant flows into the void.

“Goodyear’s customers trialing Duraseal tyres have been amazed at the punishment they will take and the huge reduction in vehicle downtime and expenses due to punctures compared with conventional tyres.”

Duraseal Technology allows drivers to continue driving after the tread is punctured and allows the tyre to remain in service, which is perfect for vehicles such as tippers, agitators and garbage trucks, where punctures not only mean long periods of downtime but also can ruin tyres due to them being inadvertently driven with reduced inflation pressure.

“Duraseal tyres are also remarkable in that they can be retreaded in the normal way without affecting the efficiency of the sealant.”

Unveiled at last year’s Brisbane Truck and Machinery Show, the performance of Duraseal tyres was put to the ultimate test when two Renault Kerax 6×6 trucks fitted with the Duraseal tyres covered about 20,000 kilometres as service vehicles on the Dakar Rally.

On the route, which started in Lisbon, crossed the Sahara desert and finished in Dakar, no tyre problems were encountered.

“Duraseal has become an established product in a very short time. The fact that both Renault and Volvo offer the tyre as original equipment on their construction chassis illustrates this.”

Goodyear’s Duraseal technology is now available in four models:

Mixed Service G287 All Position 315/80R22.5 tyre
Mixed Service G287 All Position 11R22.5 tyre
Mixed Service G288 All Position 11R22.5 tyre
Mixed Service G177 Drive Position 11R22.5 tyre
