Volvo targets medium-duty truck market with FL range

The ultra-competitive medium truck market is the latest target for Volvo Trucks as it attempts to improve its total sales

The ultra-competitive medium truck market is the latest target for Volvo Trucks as it attempts to improve its total sales in the Australian market during 2008, following the release of its new FL range.

With a capability to operate throughout the vocational and route delivery markets, the FL will face stiff competition from market leaders Isuzu and Hino, with new trucks from both manufacturers vying for sales supremacy alongside the baby Swede.

Powered by a 7-litre engine with power ratings of either 240hp or 280hp, Volvo is also looking to tackle garbage collection and local government contracts in their bid for greater piece of the total market.

The 4X2 rigid FL chassis features plenty of hi-tech additions, including EBS brakes and electronic stability control as standard, as well as brake blending, the FL also has a remotely controlled rear airbag suspension.

Able to be controlled by the driver to suit specific conditions, the FL can be lowered by 60mm or raised up to 140mm, providing a boost for loading and unloading, or to cope with broken road conditions.

Driver concerns are also addressed with the FL, design highlights including improved all-round vision, particularly from special ‘close quarters’ rear view mirrors, while three cab variants allow operators to choose one suitable for their application.

A greaseless chassis helps to extend service intervals, which include 100,000 kilometre oil change periods, as well as meeting tough new Euro 4 emission standards.
