Victorian trucking operator Power’s Country Express has come a long way since investing in its staff.

Director Damien Power recognised the need to seek professional mentoring from leaders in the transport industry due to his age.

The 37-year-old, who was only 23 when he started his general freight business, says it’s important for young regional companies to seek help.

Two years ago, he signed up with transport and logistics training organisation JKR Training for Business, which has introduced training by integrating modules such as chain of responsibility, dangerous goods awareness, manual handling and fatigue management into the company’s policy and procedures.

Thanks to their support, the business was named the winner of Investing in People prize at this year’s Freight Industry Awards for implementing a flexible training regime for its employees.

“Their support has been amazing and without that who knows where we would be,” Power says.

“We are lucky we have got some mentors who are quite helpful – their wealth of knowledge has been invaluable for us.

“It’s quite easy to pick up the phone and ask for their opinion.”
