Port reopens after blustery conditions subside

Victoria’s Port of Portland has reopened following its closure late last week due to high waves.

The port was closed on July 9 after a seven-metre swell rocked the ships and grew by a metre the next day, the port’s CEO Jim Cooper says.

The precinct reopened yesterday.

“The ocean swell down here was very big over the weekend. That meant that ships were breaking their lines at the berths and moved around. It was quite dangerous,” Cooper says.

“We had three ships waiting just off the port for the time we closed the port.”

“No one was affected on the landside because the trucks just kept delivering to the port, that’s why we have stockpiles and warehouses. It has negligible impact on our negotiations.”
