The Port of Melbourne is once again at the top of the rankings for sustainability when it comes to Australian ports as it maintained its position as sector leader in recent sustainability assessments.
This year, the port ranked equal first in Australian ports in the 2025 Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) Infrastructure Asset Assessment.
While in the past two years the port was the sole number one in Australia for the assessment, this year it is now equal first.
The port maintained its five-star GRESB rating and once again scored the maximum possible 100 points in GRESB’s independent review of its policies, risk management and key metrics across more than 50 environmental, social and governance focus areas.
“We are incredibly proud that Port of Melbourne has achieved a 5-star GRESB rating for the fourth consecutive year, and has maintained the maximum possible 100 points for the second year in a row,” Port of Melbourne CEO Saul Cannon says.
“That said, this recognition is a reminder that there is still much to do. We continue to
work towards Net Zero by 2030 for our Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
“Looking ahead, there is opportunity to lead by example in building a more resilient and sustainable future, and we look forward to working closely with our stakeholders and the wider industry.”
The 2025 reflects the port’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, including recent milestones such as its continued pathway to Net Zero by 2030 through a reduction of Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 43 per cent in the 2024 financial year.
The port also renewed its ISO Compliance of its Integrated Management Systems with certifications for Quality, Environment, Occupational Health and Safety, and Asset Management.
It also achieved ‘Tier 1 Skilled Workplace’ status in the Mental Health First Aid Australia Workplace Recognition Program, reflecting a range of workplace mental health training and initiatives.
Used by more than 850 infrastructure funds and assets around the world and representing more than $1.6 trillion in infrastructure investment, GRESB is the leading environmental, social and governance benchmark for infrastructure investments across the world.
