The Port of Brisbane has this week unveiled its 2023/24 Sustainability Report that details the progress it’s achieved in the past year as it aims to meet its 2030 Sustainability Program.
Port of Brisbane CEO Neil Stephens says the port has continued to deliver, with leading initiatives and projects delivering value for the port, its customers and the community.
“Sustainability is at the centre of how we are growing and developing the Port of Brisbane for Queensland,” Stephens says.
“This year, we achieved significant sustainability goals including Net Zero Emissions (scope 1 and 2) – well ahead of our 2030 timeline – and Advanced Workplace Recognition by Mental Health First Aid Australia.
“Overall, 2023/24 was a solid year for the Port of Brisbane with a strong trade performance, including a record year for containers, motor vehicles and cotton exports. We also continued to experience sustained demand for property, delivering four property developments (new and expanded customer facilities).”
Combined, Stephens says these developments are leading to strong economic and trade growth for Queensland as a whole.
“Our community partnerships program supported 36 community partners with over $377,000 in funding and we proudly commenced our ‘Innovate’ Reconciliation Action Plan during the year,” Stephens says.
“While we’re pursuing many exciting initiatives, much of this work is undertaken in collaboration with our customers and partners, who share our commitment to delivering long-term, sustainable outcomes for the port and the community.
“All of this great work is ultimately driven by our PBPL team, and I thank them for their extraordinary work and commitment through the year.
“While we’re proud of our achievements, we know there is plenty more work to be done. We are optimistic about our shared future and look forward to the next 12 months as we strive to be a sustainability leader in the ports industry.”
Key sustainability and business achievements from the past year for the port include delivering on commitments for its $500 million Sustainability Linked Loan, achieving Net Zero Emissions (scope 1 and 2), receiving Achieved Advanced Workplace Recognition status by Mental Health First Aid Australia and recording 1.61 million TEUs handled through the port.
On top of this, the port also invested approximately $240 million in port infrastructure and property development, while 53 per cent of all port-generated waste was recycled and 22.5 per cent of all port energy was generated by onsite renewables.
