Port debate looms

Strategic challenges of ports along Australia’s eastern seaboard will be debated at a logistics seminar in Victoria

May 20, 2013

The strategic challenges of ports along Australia’s eastern seaboard will be discussed at an upcoming logistics seminar in Melbourne.

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Australia (CILTA) and Kangan Institute will host the seminar to debate globalisation, increased population, outsourcing of Australia’s production capacity, and an increase of commodities and materials in and out of Australian ports.

According CILTA, this year’s logistics seminar,
Facing the Challenges of Change and Increased Demand over the next Decade along the Eastern Seaboard,
will build on last year’s event, which focussed on peak oil, with discussions involving more than 60 local
logistics
representatives.

CILTA will discuss how Australian port operators are increasing the size and functionality of infrastructure to cope with current and forecast growth expectations.

“By 2025, Port of Melbourne is predicted to be handling about 5 million containers a year,” a CILTA statement says.

“This prediction has major consequences for our industry, considering that in 2011-2012 financial year, the port reached an Australian record of 2.58 million containers; an average of about 7,000 containers everyday.”

Organiser Ian Burns has invited his logistics diploma students to help organise the event.

The event is free and will be held at the Department of Transport Building on Exhibition Street, Melbourne on July 11, starting at 6pm.
