Police impose limits on trucks over Easter

Truck drivers in Queensland will be stopped from carrying over-dimensional loads during Easter break to improve road safety

By Samantha Freestone | March 26, 2010

Over-dimensional loads will be banned by police as part of safety measures over the Easter holiday perod.

Any over-dimensional vehicle cannot travel on Queensland roads from April 1 until April 6.

Grant Sprowles from Queensland Police says the rule has been in place for 14 years.

The guideline was created in 1995 and since then there have been no fatalities involving over-dimensional trucks over the Easter or Christmas holidays.

“And we want it to stay that way,” Sprowles says.

However operators can make applications for single trip permits during the Easter period. Individual permits can be issued subject to the discretion of a superintendent of traffic officer.

“We don’t want to get in the way of peoples business, so there are exceptions, and we don’t want to unduly restrict trade. Individual companies can apply for permits for individual circumstances,” Sprowles says.
