Pentarch to truck iron ore to Eden from Gippsland

Eastern Iron takes advantage of south NSW regional port for export

Pentarch Logistics and Eastern Iron have linked with a view to transporting magnetite from East Gippsland to the southern New South Wales port of Eden.

The iron ore is destined for Asia but under a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) would first make a 234km Princes Highway trip from the miner’s Nowa Nowa Iron Project, east of Lakes Entrance.

According to listed Eastern Iron’s Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), the present deal would see:

Both parties to cooperate on storage options of the product, and on utilisation of the port facilities at the Port of Eden

Pentarch will investigate the storage and export up to 1.5 million tonnes a year from the Port of Eden

Both parties have agreed to work together to investigate site modification and operating procedures for storage and product handing and loading

Pentarch and Eastern Iron will enter into negotiations aimed at finalising a binding commercial agreement.

Eastern Iron has been researching the logistics of Eden export for some two years and notes that it can accommodate post-panamax ships able to handle 75,000 tonnes.

Eden is more commonly known as a timber products export port and Eastern Iron is confident existing conveying and ship loading systems can work for ore with “minimal modifications”.

A fleet owner of prime movers and log trailers as well as chip cartage trucks and bins, Pentarch Logistics is part of the group’s Pentarch Forestry business but iron ore appears something of a departure for the operation.

ATN is awaiting information from Pentarch on what fleet resources might be brought to bear on this task.

According to the group’s website, Pentarch Logistics manages all Eden wharf operations including unloading trucks, scaling logs, quality control and ship loading.

It is also responsible for inventory management using a customised enterprise resource planning software package that enables precise tracking of logs from forest to end customer.

Pentarch Stevedoring manages the stevedoring requirements for Pentarch Forestry and provides stevedoring services at Eden and other ports as required.

It also provides stevedoring services to third parties at the Eden facility for other bulk shipping cargoes.
