Partnerships and prosperity headline Port of Melbourne sustainability report

The latest report is live now, with Australia’s largest general cargo and container port handling a record amount of goods in the past financial year

Port of Melbourne has unveiled its 2025 Sustainability Report, emphasising long-term value for people, planet, partnerships and economic prosperity.

As Australia’s largest general cargo and container port and a key trade gateway for south-eastern Australia, Port of Melbourne is committed to building a sustainable port for the benefit of the Victorian communities and businesses.

The 2025 Sustainability Report showcased key achievements and progress made during the 2025 financial year period, with the port aiming to lead the decarbonisation of its supply chain, minimise its impact on land, air and waters, and build strong stakeholder and community relationships.

The port handled a record $154 billion worth of goods in the financial year, facilitating 3.39 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) while sourcing from a supplier base comprising 96 per cent local suppliers.

In FY25, Port of Melbourne’s sustainability milestones include maintaining Tier 1 Skilled Workplace certification in the Mental Health First Aid Australia Workplace Recognition Program, initiating its innovate Reconciliation Action Plan, sourcing 61 per cent of its electricity sourced from renewable sources and reducing scope 1 and 2 emissions by 62 per cent since the 2022 financial year.

The port also contributed $231,000 to community partners and delivered port education programs to 4,475 students.

This year, Port of Melbourne ranked equal first among Australian and international ports in the 2025 Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) Infrastructure Asset Assessment. The port also maintained its 5-star GRESB rating for the fourth consecutive year and scored the maximum possible 100 points for the second year.

“The 2025 Sustainability Report reflects our commitment to creating long-term value for Victoria – its people, environment, and economy. Looking ahead, we intend to deepen our collaboration with government, industry, and the broader community to drive even greater impact,” Port of Melbourne CEO Saul Cannon says.

Cannon says sustainability continues to be a key aspect of the Port’s operations, particularly as it caters to the needs of Victoria’s growing population and economy.

“As demand for trade continues to rise, we remain focused on embedding sustainability into our operations and growth, ensuring we deliver not only for today, but for Victoria’s future,” he says.
