Pallet issues no closer to being resolved

The Australian Logistics Council believes the industry is a long way from resolving transaction matters

Nearly a year since a working group was formed to tackle long-running pallet issues, the Australian Logistics Council (ALC) believes the industry is a long way from resolving transaction matters.

The industry’s lack of knowledge about pallets continues to undermine business across the supply chain, ALC Managing Director Michael Kilgariff says.
He believes many small operators fail to keep track of their pallets due to little training.

“It’s become quite apparent that one of the major failures in the pallet industry is lack of knowledge and lack of training in terms of people understanding exactly what their roles and responsibilities are in the whole pallet system,” Kilgariff says.

“A lot of people haven’t kept track of how many pallets are on their books or how many pallets are actually in their account. Part of it is really about training. I think there’s a need for transparency around how the system works.”

The working group was established to develop and implement guidelines for dispute resolution for pallet transactions and provide information about existing processes.

Kilgariff believes The Victorian Office of the Small Business Commissioner’s draft code of conduct came to a stall because the industry perceived it to be at a state level.

“We are currently working with the Transport Logistics and Skills Industry Council (TLISC) to have some things put into a training package around pallets. It will help develop that understanding,” he says.
