Transport-savvy energy firm and coal seam gas (CSG) proponent Origin has kicked off the latest industry safety initiative, the CSG Logistics Safety Code of Practice.
Australian Logistics Council (ALC) issued the first licence to Origin, representing the Australia Pacific LNG Project, under the code, which was developed in line with the National Logistics Safety Code (NLSC).
Origin and the project have garnered expert support for the code, with implementation being overseen by former ALC Program Director Ian Ross, who was formerly involved in the creation of the national code.
The CSG code covers areas such as:
- Fatigue management, including driver health and fitness for duty, scheduling and
transit times - Safe loading practices, including mass, dimension and load restraint
- Speed management
- Vehicle compliance and safety
- Contractor safety, including subcontractor management.
Origin Upstream CEO Paul Zealand, whose company took the lead in formulating the industry code, says Origin is committed to ensuring safe heavy vehicle movement.
“During the next four years, the number of heavy vehicle movements from our project alone is expected to increase significantly,” he adds.
ALC Managing Director Michael Kilgariff congratulated Origin for it proactive stance on road safety.
“CSG will account for a large proportion of the forecast increase in heavy vehicle usage in Queensland,” he said.
“In becoming the first signatory to the CSG code, Origin is ensuring that all company employees operating heavy vehicles, contractors and subcontractors will comply with the 45 legal elements laid out in the code.”
Zealand says the CSG code will build on vehicle management safety policies the company already has in operation, including speed inhibitors, vehicle monitoring systems and extensive driver training.
Early this year, Origin helped showcase its comprehensive alliance with Volvo Group, which included driver training, truck maintenance and truck supply across the range of Volvo, Mack and UD vehicles.
Australia Pacific LNG is a joint venture between Origin, ConocoPhillips and Sinopec.
The project project includes the development of Australia Pacific LNG’s substantial coal seam gas resources in the Surat and Bowen Basins, a 530 km transmission pipeline, and a multi-train LNG facility on Curtis Island, near Gladstone, Origin says.
