Operators, businesses join forces to get road fixed

Transport operators and businesses in Melbourne's west band together to lobby Victorian Government to upgrade dodgy stretch of road

Transport operators and businesses in Melbourne’s west have banded together to lobby the Victorian Government to upgrade a dodgy stretch of road notorious for causing delay and safety risks.

The Wyndham Industrial Liaison and Development Committee (WILD) wants Dohertys Road duplicated between Fitzgerald Road and Grieve Parade, and traffic lights installed on the Hume Road intersection.

The road is located in an industrial hub where many B-doubles run out of room when turning corners.

WILD Chairman and local business operator Mick O’Donnell says the road was built in the 1960s to cater for the small business sector but continuous industrial growth has seen it deteriorate.

“In 1995 the Government designed the upgrade of the road. They funded the project but when they needed money elsewhere they pulled it and have never come back to fund it since,” O’Donnell says.

“That’s 17 years ago that was felt to be important enough to design and fund the project but has never happened since.”

The committee is launching a campaign called Fix Dohertys Road in late February.

“Everybody hates the road and the corners because they’re so dangerous to get through,” O’Donnell says.

“We know from a number of transport companies here that the road frustrates them and in many cases causes delays and risks.”

The Wyndham City Council has caught the state of the single-lane road on camera, with the footage sent to the Government for consideration.
