Operator calls for “constructive” toll road approach

Two Men and a Truck Founder Richard Kuipers has called for further consultation with decision-makers to lower the strain of Sydney toll road costs

It is impossible to doubt the rising prices of Sydney’s already expensive toll road network is having a deeply negative impact on all sorts of transport businesses in the region.

Two Men and a Truck has operated in Australia for 36 years and currently carries out over 12,000 moves across Australia every year.

Recently, a moving job just outside Sydney resulted in over $172 spent on tolls for a single job. Founder Richard Kuipers says, often, these straining expenses are unavoidable.

“With our drivers operating across the city, we do our best to minimise toll expenses,” Kuipers says. “But, in many cases, they are unavoidable.

“These costs put us in a difficult position – we either pass them onto customers or we absorb them, which reduces our profitability.”

With Transurban reporting over $3.535 billion in toll road revenue in FY24, almost half of which came from its Sydney assets, Kuipers has called on further work to be done by decision-makers to ease the stress on heavy vehicle transport.

“We need constructive dialogue with policymakers to find a fair solution,” he says.

“We need a balanced approach that supports infrastructure funding and the long-term sustainability of Australian business.”
