Operation Tilt puts heat on tow trucks in NSW

NSW authorities wrap up two-day compliance blitz against the tow truck industry.

Authorities in New South Wales have turned their attention toward tow truck operators as part of an ongoing enforcement campaign against heavy vehicles.

NSW Police and the Roads and Maritime Services yesterday wrapped up Operation Tilt, which targeted tow truck drivers and operators to ensure their vehicles were licensed and compliant

Officers stopped 31 tow trucks between July 1 and 2 in the Milperra area, leading to 14 defect notices that included one vehicle being taken off the road.

“Tow truck operators need to be aware our teams dont just wait at checking stations, they are out on the road making sure vehicles are compliant to ensure safety for NSW road users,” RMS director of safety and compliance Peter Wells says.

During inspections, authorities detected two unlicensed operators, failures to comply with safety equipment and five drivers who could not provide a schedule to tow.

Police also issued traffic infringements for not wearing a seatbelt, load restraints and an unsecured load.

“Given the essential service that tow trucks provide the community we will work with Roads and Maritime to ensure these vehicles are roadworthy and able to carry out what is an important task,” acting assistant commissioner Stuart Smith says.

“We are committed to making sure each and every vehicle out there is roadworthy and not putting others at risk.”
